Someone you admire very much has just done something you find reprehensible. How do you deal with the situation?

Well, we cannot all be perfect, can we? I suppose it would matter what this reprehensible thing is specifically. Some things are easier to deal with than others. For example, did he fuck up my research irreparably, or is he an American? One of these things is far more of an egregious sin than the other.

To be a bit less vague, I should say that thumbscrews are a very reputable method of getting your revenge on someone. But that is just off the top of my head.

My consciousness would be inside Samantha's body in the M.P.D., und hers would be in mine with those dim-witted companions of mine. I would have ultimate control over the zombies back on Earth, und the entire planet would be like my own personal little plaything!

Power 1: Telepathy - He can insert his thoughts (words and images both apply) into someone else's mind/project them for others in the area to hear or see. He can only hear/see thoughts back if the person either makes a conscious effort to let him into their mind, or they're in too great a distressed state to keep him out.
Power 2: Dream eating - He can alter the course of a person's dreams to take them in a different direction -- while he cannot direct the dream himself to make specific things happen, he can will it into a more frightening/sad/happy/etc. angle. He is then capable of eating the dreams he caused in people while they're asleep, which will taste differently based on the type of dream/nightmare they had. He does not need to influence a dream to eat it, though it will be more flavorful if he does. He is capable of watching these dreams as they play out.
Power 3: Mind meld bite - If he bites someone hard enough to break skin, he can temporarily put a portion of his consciousness in them. The smaller the portion, the harder it'll be for him to control the other body -- essentially, at its lowest level, he'll just be a voice in their head observing through their senses. At its highest level, he'll be able to control a person's entire body, but this will leave his original body comatose for the duration.

Richtofen is motivated above all by power. He desires the ability to control everyone, from his comrades to his enemies to the zombies that he helped create. As a control freak, he's not satisfied unless he's the one calling the shots. He relies heavily on spite to keep him going, and there's not a moment when he isn't daydreaming about having more power than he has already.

Handling Conflict

Richtofen does not take well to conflict. He wants everyone to bow to him, so when he's challenged, he often screeches out some sort of insult in protest at best, and gets violent at worst. Usually the latter. He would rather kill a problem than talk it out. He would rather kill than do most things, really.

MANIPULATIVE - Richtofen is a scheming liar who will do anything to get his way, up to and including to pretending to be a Nazi to fool his teammates into thinking he's not the one who experimented on them.

HYPERSEXUAL - Richtofen does not care what others think of him, and indulges in the pleasures of the flesh (such as killing zombies and getting off on it) frequently. He enjoys making others uncomfortable with his flamboyant sexuality.

HAIR-TRIGGER TEMPER - There is very little that doesn't make Richtofen angry. He's quick to shout, to fight, to kill. His mood can change on a dime, and when it does, you'd better hope you're not on his bad side.

POWER-HUNGRY - Richtofen will stop at nothing to achieve control over everyone and everything. There's nothing he won't do, no low he won't sink to. Power gets him off, and knowing he has that power over someone is the best feeling in the world.

VIOLENT - Richtofen has a fondness for violence that most people do not. The feeling of blood, bone, and sinew against his skin makes him uncontrollably aroused. He enjoys hearing people scream.

UNEMPATHETIC - After touching an alien artifact that slowly drove him insane over the course of 5 years, Richtofen no longer has any empathy for anyone. Description

Richtofen is a visibly older man, graying hair around his temples and wrinkles on his face. A crescent-shaped scar on his cheek, he also has scars from his many brushes with zombies, including a slew of bite marks. His body is lithe, built for intellect and not brute strength, but he's able to lift heavy weapons with ease.

Though his views do not align with the Nazi party's, he is usually seen wearing one of their uniforms as an attempt at a diversion to fool his comrades-in-arms. Pretending to be a common soldier with no knowledge of the origin of the zombies or any of the places they visit, he has thus far been able to avoid detection - mostly.

First Impressions

Upon meeting Richtofen, one will often be confronted with the stench of blood and death. Less so in Reparacija, though the scent does linger in his clothes from home. His ice-blue eyes are very noticeable, a piercing gaze sharp on whoever he examines. His voice is loud and commands attention, just like every other thing about him. Feel free to punch him in the face if you see him in Nazi garb. He deserves it.

history

Pre-Insanity

Richtofen didn't always love to cause others agony. In fact, he used to be a rather mild-mannered man, one who vehemently disagreed with his organization aiding the Nazis during wartime. Submissive and obedient to his superiors, he deferred to his partner in Group 935, Dr. Maxis, doing whatever he was told.

However, things began to shift the longer Maxis ignored his scientific contributions. Maxis, uninterested in Richtofen's attempts to create a functioning teleporter, drove Richtofen to attempt to use himself as a human test subject to test its functionality.

That's where things began to go downhill.

Touching the M.P.D.

Richtofen was teleported to a base on the moon that nobody had thus far been aware of. Exploring the place, he came across a strange pyramid, which he was driven to touch by an indescribable urge. Immediately upon touching it, he was infected with a pair of voices inside his head, voices that would work to drive him insane over the course of the next 5 years.

Richtofen's lust for power grew, and he secretly turned members of Group 935 against Maxis's leadership. Doing research at the moon base, they quickly learned that the pyramid - the M.P.D. - could be powered by the life force of anything from rats to humans.

This led to human sacrifice, and Richtofen's secret machinations grew in scale until eventually, they couldn't be hidden anymore. After an attempt to teleport a dog gone wrong, leading Dr. Maxis's daughter to wind up on the moon and trapped in the M.P.D., the real fun began.

Zombie Apocalypse

Maxis, attempting to teleport to save his daughter Samantha, ended up caught in the electrical force surrounding the moon base. Ordering Samantha to kill Richtofen and all of his duplicitous comrades, the influx of zombies drove Richtofen back to the Der Riese facility, where he awakened his three test subjects - Dempsey, Nikolai, and Takeo, POWs who he'd enhanced and given amnesia with element 115.

Donning a Nazi uniform and pretending to be one of them to avoid having to cop to his experiments, he and his three companions began to mow their way through the zombie horde as they followed Richtofen's lead to hop from place to place in search of certain objects and information. Richtofen manipulated them heavily, using his advantage as the only one who knew what was going on to prod them in the direction he wanted.

His ultimate goal is to return to the moon, stronger and with the help of his unwitting pawns, to switch bodies with Samantha and take control of the zombies that she'd been unrelentingly chasing him with the entire time.

Scientific Knowlege

Richtofen is a bright scientific mind with a lot of ideas and the intellect to make them a reality. He helped perfect teleportation, raising the dead, and creating special weaponry stronger than any common gun. He's innovative and unrelenting, and will do anything in order to further what he considers to be "scientific progress." Even if that means a little human experimentation here and there.

Despite his somewhat lithe frame, Richtofen is nevertheless able to lift and use heavy weaponry with ease. He's adept with guns, knives, flamethrowers, bombs, and basically every other method of making someone no longer alive. His preferred weapon is one of his own creation, the Wunderwaffe DG-2, which releases a powerful electrical charge that is capable of bouncing between targets to kill them all in one easy shot.

Manipulation

Richtofen has a silver tongue and the remarkable ability to get people to go along with what he wants, even with little to no explanation. He's capable of blatantly lying to people's faces and getting away with it (though over the years, his subtlety has degraded somewhat). No one is safe from his schemes, and he'll say and do anything in order to further his own goals.

Medical Training

As a trained surgeon, Richtofen has quite a bit of medical knowledge and an understanding of human anatomy in a way that makes it easier for him to tear people apart. He takes apart and he puts back together, though not always correctly. Despite this, there are things that still elude him - where is the trust barrier? Further study is warranted, but he can say with certainty that it is not located in the spleen.

"Tank" Dempsey

Richtofen hates Americans with a burning passion, and Dempsey exemplifies every reason why. Meatheaded, patriotic to a fault, and aggressively womanizing, Richtofen cannot stand anything about him. He notes that Dempsey's intellect is low, but his will is strong, and despite his hatred, finds him "interesting and muscley." That doesn't stop him from wanting to rip his still-beating heart out and eat it, however.

Nikolai Belinski

Richtofen is fond of Nikolai... A bit too fond, as his obvious crush will tell you. He's always quick to compliment Nikolai and suck up to him, and has been known to point out romantic settings to him as a sort of hint-hint-wink-wink-nudge-nudge. Despite Nikolai's clear distrust and suspicion of him, Richtofen remains undeterred, frequently flirty and overly-fawning.

Takeo Masaki

Ambivalent toward Takeo, Richtofen doesn't have much to say about him. But that's because nobody fucking likes Takeo (save for Dempsey, but he's an idiot, so that doesn't count). Fuck off, Takeo. You're so boring.

Appearance: Here
Personality: Imagine the stereotype of a mad scientist with a heavy German accent. Flamboyant personality, love for the unusual, and a willingness to do whatever it takes for the sake of "progress..." And you have Richtofen.

While at first he used to be a rather mild-mannered man, his personality was starkly changed when he touched an alien artifact on the moon. It infected him with voices of eldritch creatures that quickly drove him insane. His careful reservations were replaced with a loud desire to experiment on people, animals, and whatever else might entertain him.

Richtofen no longer has a sense of right and wrong. What he cares about is what will gain him the most power and entertain him most. He struggles with empathy and understanding how other people feel; when confronted with the idea of a "trust barrier," i.e. a mental barrier that may keep someone from putting their trust in him, he believed it to be a physical body part that he'd need to dissect people to try and find.

He's a manipulative, scheming asshole, and would go to any lengths to deceive people. He spends his time lying to his teammates in zombie-killing to trick them into serving his own ends. He takes delight in knowing that people are doing what he wants against their own self-interest.

Richtofen is sadomasochistic, with an emphasis on the sadism part. Causing pain brings him great pleasure. Receiving it is a thrill, a reminder that he's alive, but giving it reminds him that he has power over life and death.

He's not afraid to get his hands dirty, even if he can be a bit finnicky sometimes. With a love for the undead that he and his team kill everywhere they go, calling them his "children," he's certainly an exception to the rule that zombie-killers hate their prey. He takes great pride in having aided in the zombies' creation.

Quick to anger, with an explosive temper, he's also prone to mood swings. He can be perfectly sweet one moment and ready to blow your head off with a shotgun the next. He follows his own whims above all else, even if it makes him more suspicious sometimes. He has problems keeping his thoughts to himself, a victim to outbursts of his own making.

This lying, cheating, murderous bastard is hard to get along with, particularly if you're on his bad side, but he does have a soft spot to him. Romantically inclined toward one of his teammates (who does not return his affection), he's not afraid to flaunt his sexuality, even to the detriment of the comfort of others. He seems to have a fondness for soft, hairy, filthy men.

He thinks highly of his own intelligence. As a doctor, he's certainly earned a bit of an ego. However, he overestimates himself constantly, prideful and narcissistic.

All in all, Richtofen is a disgusting little gremlin bastard man. He deserves to be locked away with no way out for the rest of his miserable, scheming life.

What did they do to end up here?: The real question is, what hasn't Richtofen done to end up here? His crimes range from garden-variety poor manners and lack of boundaries to far more serious torture, murder, and the desire to destroy the entire world like some kind of cliche video game villain. Wait...

Anyway. Richtofen is the archetypal mad scientist, who kidnaps people to experiment on them for his own gain. He has a nonexistent understanding of concepts of good and evil, and does what he wants at all times. If what he wants is to cut out someone's spleen, well, so be it.

His psychopathic behavior extends to children and animals, who he's not afraid to experiment on and/or murder if it suits his ends (though he has a soft spot for dogs). While he's not sexually abusive to either of those groups, those reservations don't extend to the adult men who he travels with, who he's not afraid to feel up or harass with his constant flirtations.

His end goal of controlling all the zombies (that he helped create) on Earth and enslave the living population is pretty prison-worthy in and of itself, probably.

He's also a lying, manipulative sneak. Though he's not a Nazi himself, he has no qualms dressing up like one to deceive his teammates, which has to be another crime worth being jailed for. He'll obscure the truth, mislead, and do whatever it takes in order for things to turn out in his favor.

Powers / Abilities: Richtofen is adept with weapons of all kinds, from the normal to the fantastical. He's a skilled surgeon and intelligent inventor, and, despite his wild personality, is actually rather smart. While not necessarily a "power," he does suffer from otherworldly, violent voices inside his head (not schizophrenia; it's an external force, not a mental illness).

Dr. Richtofen is a psychopathic, violent, depraved man who loves blood, guts, torture, death, and fuckin' dudes. He is not a Nazi, though in canon he does dress up like one for plot reasons. His character includes WWII-era themes, unethical science, zombie apocalypses, necrophilia/zombie-fuckin', torture, brainwashing, voices in his head (not in a schizophrenia way, but in an eldritch monster way), murder, uncontrollable horniness, and lots of use of weapons of war.

Canon Point: Original timeline, Shangri-La map. Untimely death-by-zombie.
Age: 50s or 60s

Description: Richtofen is a white man, about 5'6, with a physique that's stuck on the border between "soft nerd" and "muscular." He has blue eyes and short, dark brown hair that's graying at the edges. Most of his features are obscured by his uniform, which looks to be a cross between Wehrmacht and SS. He wears a peaked cap and a swastika armband, and all of his clothes are permanently bloodstained. He has a few scars, the most prominent of which is a red crescent-shaped one under his right eye. He's visibly older, with deep bags under his eyes and wrinkles all over his face. He speaks with a thick German accent that fluctuates in pitch, and he has a slight lisp. (He's voiced by Nolan North!)

In Hell, he'll have a big, deep bite mark on the left side of his neck from the zombie bite that ultimately killed him, as well as several smaller bites and scratches all over.

Physical changes: Permanently pale, blue-gray, corpse-y skin. He can still bleed, though.

Powers: Richtofen's "powers" are extremely canon-specific and not at all superhuman. He can resist infection from zombie bites in his own world, because his zombies are infected with element 115, the element he's worked almost exclusively with for years. As such, he's developed a tolerance for it.

Additionally, Richtofen has two voices in his head. Like, actual voices of weird, spiritual aliens (the wiki refers to this as schizophrenia, because the people writing the CoD wiki aren't always the brightest bulbs). He got them after touching a pyramid on the moon, which was a bad idea, because that's what set off his downward spiral into insanity. The voices helped him a little bit when they told him how to try and take control of the zombies, but their screaming also comes laced with demands for bloodshed, so they're not too fantastic when you get down to it. Now that he's dead, they'll basically just yell at him forever. Sort of like parents!

On the non-fantastical side, Richtofen has genius-level engineering knowledge, as is evidenced by all the inventions he's thought up and built. Lightning guns, teleporters, and even a device that can bend time and space are all on his resume. (Alright, so maybe that's a little fantastical, too.) He's also knowledgeable about a wide range of military-grade weaponry and can use everything from handguns to assault weapons with ease. Plus, he's a doctor. Isn't he just a great guy to take home to mama?

History: Here. I'm taking him from the original timeline, so the things under "Origins Timeline," which take place in an alternate universe, don't count. CoD likes to make everything weirdly confusing!

Hell Status: Hell Newbie

What Brings Them To Hell: Literally everything. Richtofen started a zombie apocalypse, attempted to murder a colleague and his young daughter, tortured and brainwashed several men, willingly associated with Nazis, had his employees stage a coup and sacrifice a bunch of people to an alien pyramid, did experiments on everything from little girls to pregnant dogs, and loves to torture, kill, maim, dismember, snack on, shoot, explode, manipulate, and just generally fuck up anyone he can get his hands on. He shows no remorse for any of this. Clearly, there's no debate as to where he belongs.

The Pitch: For being a necromancing necrophiliac Nazi, Richtofen is a fun character. He's a witty, energetic guy who makes more than his fair share of dad jokes, particularly while dismembering zombies. He considers them his children, so it's fitting. He's genuinely delighted to do what he does, and what he does is kill those zombies. A fuckton of them. All day, every day.

“But wait,” you ask, “didn't he create them?” Yes, he did! Unfortunately, a little girl who he once tried to kill (long story) took control of them, so now they follow him and try to eat his brains no matter where he goes. And he goes lots of places, gathering artifacts to try and help him reach the moon (longer story) so that he can take his rightful place as zombie king. He also just kind of wants to rule the world, because he's a complete sadist and wants to torture the remaining survivors.

Of course, to do this, he needs help, which comes in the form of three soldiers he brainwashed. They don't know he's the one that did it, but he experimented on all of them and gave them amnesia. Now, he trades quips with them while they all kill zombies together. He's not shy about letting each of them know how he feels about them — how much he hates his American teammate and wants to eat his heart, for example, or how he'd love to share a romantic view with his Russian teammate. He does not give one single fuck how uncomfortable he makes any of them, which makes it all the more impressive that he's manipulated them into doing whatever he says without question. Okay, with a little question.

It's hard not to question a guy like Richtofen, who's always so happy to rip apart zombies (or living people, should the opportunity present itself). He's talkative and egotistical, never shy when it comes to saying what's on his mind, and what's on his mind often tends to be “creative dismemberment.” Or naked, literal bloodbaths with all of his male teammates. He's not popular, but he gets the job done.

Richtofen's also given complexity by his backstory: he wasn't insane until he touched an alien artifact that corrupted him. He actually wanted to make the world a better place! But he's always been a bit of a narcissist, and he's always had an angry streak, and those dark parts of him that used to make him sick got magnified tenfold. Now, he hasn't a care in the world, preferring to lock his past away rather than acknowledge the man he used to be.

Richtofen's life is one of extremes: the extremes of sanity and insanity, of life and death, of ecstatic and enraged. He's versatile in a way that campy stereotype characters often aren't, and he's hilarious to listen to. And that's why I'm apping a fucking pseudo-Nazi to your game. I'm so sorry.

Setting Fit: Richtofen, being a terrible person, would fit right in in Hell! His nature would lead him to perform experiments on the already-dead souls, particularly ones to see if he could raise them back to life (see: zombie apocalypse-starter). Failing that, since it's unfortunately verboten to do all the shitty, painful things he loves to do to people without proper authorization, he'd strive to get a job with Brimstone as one of their punishment people, or maybe as a doctor, since he is technically certified. He'd get a kick out of being a reaper, too, since it'd let him catch a glimpse at different worlds (and dead bodies). He'd never be bored in Hell, that's for sure.

I've gotten questions about it before, so I'd like to clarify the whole Nazi thing. Richtofen is, primarily, a scientist working for a worldwide organization, though he hails from WWII-era Germany. He dresses and acts like a Nazi soldier to fool a group of people that he brainwashed, so they don't know SURPRISE he's the doctor that experimented on them.

So tl;dr, he doesn't share Nazi ideology (though his own personal viewpoints are arguably worse), but he does dress like one and make up stories about being in the war. I know the anti-Semitic distinction is important for some people, and others just don't want anything to do with Nazi imagery in general, so I wanted to make things clear! I definitely don't want to offend anyone, so please don't be shy about opting out. Thanks!
